5 Steps to Prepare Your Lawn for Winter

  1. Step 1: Rake away leaves and check soil pH. When else are you going to check the pH of your soil? This may help you determine if your soil is too acidic.
  2. Step 2: Aerate. This will allow your lawn to breathe. Use a garden fork or aerator to put holes in your lawn. This also improves absorption of rainwater.
  3. Step 3: Spread topsoil. Use a rake to spread the soil evenly and into the holes from aeration. Use this opportunity to level any dips in elevation of your lawn that may have been an area water puddles.
  4. Step 4: Spread grass seed. The type of seed you use depends on how much light your yard will get and what kind of grass you already have on your lawn.
  5. Step 5: Water. This will help the topsoil fill in the holes created by aeration and nurture the grass seed. Water you lawn every day for two weeks after spreading seed.
